If you bought your home in Houston, Texas last year, do not forget to file and receive your Homestead Exemption. This is the quickest and easiest way to reduce your property tax each year.

A homestead exemption helps you save on taxes on your home. An exemption removes part of the value of your property from taxation and lowers your taxes. For example, if your home is valued at $100,000 and you qualify for a $20,000 exemption, you pay taxes on your home as if it was worth only $80,000.

It is surprising how many owners do not have this simple tax-reducing exemption on their account. To do so, just visit and look up your home.

Property Tax is tax you pay on the assessed value of your home – and the taxes are paid to the City of Houston, Harris County and the Houston Independent School District (HISD).

The Harris County Appraisal District (HCAD) Homestead Exemption is due by April 30th, if you haven’t already filed it. You can do it for free and will receive a reduction in the amount of taxes you owe when the bill comes out later this year. The exemption stays on your file year after year, so you don’t have to file each year.
